What should patients know about dermal filler safety?

Dermal fillers are injectable medical devices used to alter or restore soft-tissue volume. Common effects include swelling, bruising and tenderness. Less common complications include infection, nodules and migration.

Written and medically reviewed by Dr Karen Egan, experienced practising GP. Last reviewed 12 June 2026.

Which symptoms need urgent assessment?

Disproportionate pain, blanching, mottled colour, cool skin or any visual symptom after filler requires immediate clinical assessment.

Why does practitioner experience matter?

Safe treatment requires knowledge of anatomy, product selection, injection technique, consent, complication recognition and an appropriate emergency pathway.

Are results guaranteed?

No. Swelling and healing vary, and even technically successful treatment may not match a person’s expectations.
