What is botulinum toxin and how is it used in aesthetic medicine?

Botulinum toxin is a prescription-only medicine that temporarily reduces signalling between nerves and selected muscles. In aesthetic medicine it may be considered for particular movement-related lines after an individual clinical assessment.

Written and medically reviewed by Dr Karen Egan, experienced practising GP. Last reviewed 12 June 2026.

Why is an assessment required?

A prescriber needs to understand the concern, facial movement, medical history, medicines, previous response and possible contraindications before deciding whether treatment is appropriate.

How long does the effect last?

The onset and duration vary. Effects are temporary, and individual muscle activity, dose and treatment history can influence the response.

Is treatment always recommended?

No. A consultation may identify that another approach, no treatment or further medical consideration is more appropriate.
